Microsoft Clarity: heatmaps and session recordings
With your consent, we use Microsoft Clarity, a service provided by Microsoft Corporation, One Microsoft Way, Redmond, WA 98052, USA. Clarity helps us identify usability problems and improve our website. It processes page views, visited URLs and referrers, clicks, scrolling, device and browser information, and pseudonymous visitor and session identifiers. Connecting to Microsoft also transmits your IP address, which can be used to derive an approximate location. Heatmaps summarise interactions; session recordings reconstruct a visit. This data should not be considered anonymous.
Clarity loads only after you consent to “Microsoft Clarity – heatmaps and session recordings” in the Statistics category. Consent to Google Analytics or Marketing alone does not activate Clarity. The legal bases are Article 6(1)(a) GDPR and, where information is stored on or accessed from your device, section 25(1) TDDDG. Consent is optional; you can use our website without Clarity.
We use strict text masking. Text and form entries are masked for session recordings. We do not send our own customer identifiers, names or email addresses through the Clarity Identify function, and the tag does not link Clarity identifiers with Google Analytics identifiers. Masking does not replace consent: usage and technical data are still sent to Microsoft.
Clarity primarily uses _clck (a pseudonymous visitor identifier, up to one year) and _clsk (linking page views into a session, up to one day). Depending on browser and consent settings, Microsoft third-party cookies such as CLID, MUID, MR, SM and ANONCHK may also be used. See our cookie list and Microsoft’s documentation for details. We do not grant Clarity permission for advertising storage (ad_Storage remains denied). Microsoft describes further processing, including its own purposes such as security, product improvement and advertising, in its privacy statement.
Microsoft receives this data. Processing may take place in the USA and other countries outside the EEA. Microsoft’s privacy statement describes its participation in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and its use of Standard Contractual Clauses for international transfers. The safeguards and rights described there apply according to the relevant transfer mechanism.
According to Microsoft, playback data is normally retained for 30 days. Heatmaps, aggregated interaction data, and sessions that are labelled or marked as favourites are retained for up to nine months. Cookie lifetimes are separate from retention of data already collected.
You can withdraw consent for future processing at any time using Cookie settings in the footer or the linked settings page. Disabling Clarity ends recording, removes Clarity cookies accessible on our domain, and reloads the page. Withdrawal does not automatically delete data already lawfully processed. Cookies on Microsoft domains can be removed through your browser settings. Your other data protection rights and our contact details are set out in this privacy policy.
