What is Open Montage?

How does Open Montage work?
A project starts with a brief or reference video. The agent examines the intended audience, hook, pacing and visual style, then proposes a production route before expensive generation begins. According to the official repository, the local Backlot board exposes progress, scripts, scene cards, provider choices, quality scores and spending while the job runs.

Is Open Montage free?
The software is available under the AGPL-3.0 license. A zero-paid-key path can use local Piper narration, open archives, free media sources, Remotion or HyperFrames composition and FFmpeg. Optional provider keys add commercial image, video, voice and music models. Free software therefore does not always mean zero production cost.
Treat published cost examples as examples—not a price list
The official repository shows individual demos costing from a few cents to around one US dollar, while its prompt guidance describes larger provider-backed runs in broader ranges. Actual cost changes with duration, retries, resolution, provider pricing and the number of generated assets.
What do you need to run it?
Open Montage is not currently a frictionless consumer web editor. The documented local setup expects Python 3.10 or newer, FFmpeg, Node.js 18 or newer and an AI coding assistant that can read files and run commands. The project lists Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, Windsurf and Codex as compatible examples.
